Orchestral maneuvres in honor of J Dilla

8 03 2009

For reasons unbeknown to me, Soul Sunday has failed to jump on the J Dilla commemorative bandwagon. The warm, wholehearted tribute I’m blogging about today is my belated heads up to James D. Yancey’s musical genius.

Suite for Ma Dukes is a four part EP celebrating the career of the man known as “your favorite producer’s favorite producer”.  Rising to the occasion, Carlos Niño, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and a chamber music orchestra (!) pay tribute in grand fashion.

Pièce de resistance on Suite for Ma Dukes is the cover version of A Tribe Called Quest’s Find a way, off their fifth and final offering The Love Movement.  The song is available at dublab, but please consider purchasing the EP. It is a beauty.
